Something Extra: Do You Know What's In Your Basement?

MIAMI (CBS4) - You never know what you'll find in an attic or a basement.

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver just struck gold, finding one-point-seven million dollars worth of valuables in a basement in England where he was building a new restaurant.

Now, an even more valuable discovery in a basement in Virginia has already fetched more than three-and-a-half million dollars at an auction that began in New York today.

It's a comic book collection described as "staggering," 345 classics, including 44 of the most prized issues ever.

Among them: Action Comics, number one... Superman's debut.  It sold for almost $300,000.

When Michael Rorrer cleaned out his great aunt's basement after her death, he also found Detective Comics number 27, where Batman first appears.  In better shape than the Superman book, it sold for more than half a million!

The second Captain America, where he bursts in on Adolf Hitler, fetched more than a hundred-ten grand.

Rorrer's great-uncle, who died eighteen years ago, never talked about the collection and may not have known just what an incredible treasure he had.

The lesson, parents: if your kids want to save their comic books... let them!
