Miami Firefighter Injured In Pharmacy Fall

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Miami Fire Rescue captain was injured early Tuesday morning when he fell through a second floor after fighting a smoky fire at a Navarro pharmacy.

Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll said just after midnight an automatic fire alarm was tripped in the store at 1243 SW 8th Street. The fire started in a back room about 20 minutes after the store closed.

It took firefighters about an hour to put the fire out.

Captain Ray Pampin, 47, was on the second floor after the fire was out when he fell through an air conditioning duct and landed on the first floor 15 to 20 feet below.

"The captain was complaining of pain, numbness and tingling to his lower extremities and some pain to his heels and his feet," said assistant fire captain Joseph Zahralban.

Pampin, a 25 year veteran of the force, was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center where he listed as stable.

The preliminary investigation indicates the fire was accidental and not arson.
