State Loses Track Of 30,000 Offenders

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – "Hey, where'd they all go."

The state's Department of Transportation report nearly 30,000 offenders are currently missing from state supervision, according to the Sun-Sentinel. More than 23,000 of the unaccounted for are men; 5,600 of the missing were in for violent crimes.

The corrections department said most of the missing walked away from work release programs or stopped calling their probation officers. Others have died and their families forgot to notify the state. Some have been missing since the 1970s.
Department officials say they do everything they can to track down the missing crooks by checking in on the probation system, hospitals, prisons and death certificates. As well as paying visits to their homes, jobs, friends and family members.
