Obama Nominates New South Com Commander

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The United States Southern Command in Doral may have their next commander soon.

President Barack Obama nominated U.S. Marine Lt. General John Kelly to be the next commander of the Southern Command. Kelly would replace Air Force General Douglas Fraser as the head officer responsible for protecting the Southern part of the United States.

Currently, Kelly is a senior military analysts to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Kelly also lost his 29-year-old son in the Afgahnistan conflict last November.

Kelly is also the former commander of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. He led the unit beginning in early 2008.

Kelly's nomination will have to be confirmed by the United States Senate.
