Poll: Romney Pulling Away In South Florida
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney looks to be pulling away from his closest competitor in the Sunshine State, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.
The Q-Poll found Romney with a 38-29 percent lead over Newt Gingrich among likely Republican primary voters. Further, only six percent remain undecided, but 32 percent said there is still a chance they could change their mind.
"Speaker Newt Gingrich's momentum from his South Carolina victory appears to have stalled and Gov. Mitt Romney seems to be pulling away in Florida," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Romney also has a better favorability rating from likely primary voters, which supports his lead in the horse race."
Romney is viewed much more favorably by GOP voters, 61-28 compared to Gingrich's 50-38 percent. Additionally, male Republican voters have switched from Gingrich to Romney with the former governor holding a 36-29 percent lead.
For Gingrich, his poor debate performance Thursday night, combined with a lack of evangelical voters in Florida, could spell doom as he continues to plug away behind Romney.
The only thing that could save Gingrich at this point is a major Romney flub, or Rick Santorum leaving the race.
According to the Associated Press, Santorum is just about broke and has left Florida and he expects to lose Florida badly.
Santorum said he doesn't have the cash to keep up with Gingrich and Romney in Florida.
The only question left will be if Santorum leaves, will he endorse Gingrich or Romney?
