Big Rig Driver Plunges Into Canal Off U.S.27

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The driver of a big rig was taken to the hospital after crashing his 18-wheeler into a canal on the side of U.S. 27 in Broward.

Around 2:30 p.m., the truck was traveling north on U.S. 27 when the driver lost control just south of Sheridan Street. The truck careened across the median and the southbound lanes, plowed through a strand of young trees and shrubs and then plunged into the canal.

Pembroke Pines fire crews said when they arrived the water was just about up to the steering wheel in the truck's cab. The pulled the driver from the cab and help him to shore. He was taken to Memorial Hospital Miramar with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

Police have not released the driver's name or said what caused him cross lanes of traffic and end up in the canal.
