Body Of Missing Swimmer Washes Ashore

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The U.S. Coast Guard ended their search for a swimmer who went missing off Ft. Pierce on Sunday after his body was found washed ashore in a state park area.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office said a body matching the description of Surendra Sri Thakur, 26, was found around 7:00 a.m. at Avalon Park in Ft. Pierce. The man's identity was confirmed and the sheriff's department notified his family.

Sri Thakur and his cousin, Patrick, were swimming in the vicinity of Avalon Park when a rough surf and current caused the two of them to drift apart. A good Samaritan on a surf board rescued Patrick from the water and brought him ashore with no medical concerns. Sri Thakur was last seen struggling to stay afloat.

The Coast Guard Air Station Miami joined Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce in their search by boat and chopper for Sri Thakur.
