M-D Police Hit The Stores With Lucky Students

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) - While many head to the mall to shop for last minute gifts; the Miami-Dade Police Department did some shopping of their own with a few lucky students by their side.

The annual "Shop With a Cop" event pairs officers with local students who've worked hard to receive this special recognition.

"They reached out to local schools to select underprivileged kids that were doing really great this year, getting straight A's, and brought their grades up were able to participate in this event," said Jennifer Cabrera a Team Leader at Target in Kendall.

Target teamed up with the local Police Athletic League to host the event, and 47 students and their families participated.

"The kids are getting exactly what they want; it feels good to give back to the community in this cause," explained Cabrera.

Students like JayLiah Bivens couldn't contain their excitement, saying, "I'm getting some toys, games, clothes and stuff for my family" .

It was an excitement felt by the officers participating as well.

Director James Loftus of Miami-Dade Police enjoyed the experience saying, "The kids have been wonderful they are so excited, such great smiles."

And while toys were top of mind for the students, the day brought peace of mind for parents.

'It's a big relief on me, It really is a blessing" said Gaynell Wright, whose son was chosen to participate in the event.
