Elderly Woman Fights Back In Hialeah Robbery

HIALEAH (CBSMiami) – A feisty Hialeah woman in her 80s walked away unharmed after she fought back during an armed robbery.

According to the police three women were leaving to see a popular variety show called Sabado Gigante on Monday afternoon.  As the women were backing out of their driveway at 1080 West 46th Street, a car pulled up behind them and blocked their exit.

The women told police, a man then got out of the car, ran to their vehicle, opened the driver's side door and pistol whipped the woman sitting in the driver's seat.

Police said the 81-year old woman sitting in the passenger seat tried to stop the attack by grabbing the man's shirt.   The startled gunman fired a shot which missed the woman but hit a nearby home.   The man was apparently caught off guard when the woman fought back, said police, so he grabbed a purse and took off for his car.

Not to let him off so easy, the women drove around the neighborhood looking for the gunman's car but were unable it. By the time police were called, the suspects were long gone.

While police say they have not received reports of them victimizing anyone else, Hialeah Police spokesman Eddie Rodriguez said worries that they are out there looking for their next target.

"We've got to get these people off the streets because we are worried that they are driving around looking for innocent victims to prey on, people like the elderly," said Rodriguez.

Police have not released a description of the armed man or the person who was driving their car.
