Bond Denied For High School Students Charged In Man's Murder
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Bond was denied for two teens charged in the death of a Ft. Lauderdale man last mont.
Volvick Vassor Jr., 19, and Christlepher Zetrenne, 18, are each charged with one count of first degree murder in the death of 66-year old Nelson Heck.
Police said Heck was killed the night of November 15th at his residence in the 1100 block of NW 48th Street on Nov. 15th. Neighbors who called police to report that they heard gunshots around 11 p.m. also said they saw a car speeding away from the area.
The day before Heck was murdered, he had called police to report that his home had been broken into. While nothing was taken, Heck said he did have two safes in the house.
According to Volvick's arrest affidavit, a surveillance tape from a nearby warehouse showed the two people suspected of breaking into Heck's home wearing latex gloves. One of the suspects was identified as Volvick. When he was pulled over by police, the report states that the teen was wearing the same clothes as the person in the video.
Both Vassor and Zetrenne are students at Northeast High School in Oakland Park.
According to the report, in the school's parking lot police found a rental car which was being driven by Zetrenne. He reportedly told police he had rented it for the school's homecoming. When police interviewed Zetrenne, he told them that both he and Vassor had driven both cars, according to the arrest affidavit. A forensic exam uncovered blood in both vehicles; a DNA test matched it to Heck.
Heck, who was a Vietnam veteran, had retired recently from his job at Florida Power and Light.
Investigators believe Heck got into some sort of fight with the teens and it was during this confrontation that he was shot multiple times.
