Coral Gables High School Stabber Sentencing Postponed, Again

MIAMI (CBS4) –Attorneys set the sentencing date for Andy Rodriguez, the former Coral Gables High School student who was convicted of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of classmate Juan Carlos Rivera.

Rodriguez who faces a maximum of life in prison is set to be sentenced on November 29th at 10 a.m., attorneys for both sides agreed Monday morning.

Attorneys met before Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Dava Tunis and again postponed his sentencing date, which was originally scheduled for Monday.

On August 2nd, a jury convicted Rodriguez of second-degree murder.

Rodriguez's defense claimed self-defense in the stabbing death of Rivera. Prosecutors countered that Rodriguez killed Rivera in a jealous rage after his ex-girlfriend, Daimilsis Salgado, befriended him.

"It was a hard decision to make. You have two mothers in pain, two young men and nobody is a winner," said juror foreperson Reva Homnick. "We all looked at the evidence and we came to the same conclusion. We all came together as a cohesive group, and we hugged at the end and felt we did the right thing."
