LAKE PLACID (CBS4/AP)– An 87-year-old central Florida woman was charged with first-degree murder after police said she stabbed her husband who later died.

According to Highlands County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Nell Hays, deputies discovered Chester Smith,93, suffering from multiple stab wounds when they responded Wednesday to a 911 call from a Lake Place home.

Smith was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Hays told The Tampa Tribune that deputies found Smith’s wife, Doris, to be “distraught and disoriented.”

Doris Smith also was hospitalized. Hays said that “over the next few days information developed which resulted in the arrest of Mrs. Smith.”

Jail records show Doris Smith was booked without bond on the murder charge Friday afternoon.

Hays said she remains hospitalized under the supervision of Highlands County Detention personnel.
