Gun, Ammo Stolen From Marked MDPD Cruiser

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) - Miami-Dade Police detectives are looking for burglars who broke into at least eight vehicles in Cutler Bay, four of which belong to law enforcement.

Authorities say the burglaries happened in the area of SW 210 Street and 211th Lane between 90th Place and 92nd Avenue over a week beginning October 3rd.

Three marked Miami-Dade Police cruisers were burglarized, along with one federal law enforcement agency car.

"When somebody breaks into a police car that's the worst thing you can imagine," said Sgt. Peter Zaharakos, of Miami Dade Police.   "But unfortunately it happens."

Zaharakos' cruiser was broken into Monday night. Nothing was taken from his car. But thieves did make off with weapons from another officers car in the neighborhood.

Among the items stolen, police say, was a semi-automatic pistol, ammunition and personal belongings.

Its against police policy to leave any weapons unsecured in a car overnight. Miami-Dade Police Det. Roy Rutland said that is all under investigation.

It is an issue that concerns Veronica Robledo. Her home surveillance system caught several men on tape casing her cars in the driveway.

"They were walking by checking to see if the doors were open," she said.  "Once they saw the cameras as well they covered their faces and they walked away."

Anyone with information on these thefts is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
