Exile Group Planning Fireworks Off Of Cuban Coast

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – Cuban residents are in for quite a show if a small, Miami-based Cuban exile group pulls off a planned fireworks show in an effort to draw attention to the island's dissident community.

The Democracy Movement planned to announce details about the December 9th show Wednesday.

Democracy leader Ramon Saul Sanchez said the group is planning a massive fireworks show off the coast of Cuba timed to coincide with the world Human Rights Day on December 10th.

Saul Sanchez said the group will stay in international waters.

Sanchez said he wants to show solidarity with the Cuban activist group known as the Ladies in White.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said the agency did not have authority to intervene but anyone who is in the process of getting American citizenship and travels outside U.S. territory without government permission could hurt their chance of gaining permanent residency.
