Social Media Is Old News For South Florida Seniors

MIAMI (CBS4) - People tend to think of Facebook and Twitter as the business of young people, but Social media is expanding its reach and spreading to older Americans. It seems people over 70 are the newest group of users.

"Wow, I look very good here. I love this is my favorite picture," said Loly Salgado she looked over her photos on her Facebook page with CBS4's Jorge Estevez.

The good times are endless for Salgado as she recounts the memories neatly cataloged on her Facebook page.

"I like to know what's going on and there is a lot of things that you learn with Facebook," she said.

Salgado is 74 and she has been on Facebook for years.

"It started as people listening to Facebook and everybody talking about Facebook. I was curious. I got into it. I love it now," said Salgado.

The proof is in the pictures; from a shot of her three grand children to one of her two daughters to one with her brother and another one of her beloved dog Coco, connecting with family across the country is what keeps her logged on.

She is far from unusual. The 74 and over demographic represents the fastest growth in use of social media, from 13% to 26% in one year. Those 65 older total 39 million users, according to the Pew Research Center.

In fact, Salgado makes it a part of her morning routine from her Miami Beach apartment pairing the news on paper to the information she gets from her other favorite pass time.

"It's a wonderful thing," she said. "I really recommend it to anybody any age."
