Free Gas Giveaway Causes Gridlock In Miami

MIAMI (CBS4) – Getting a free ride took on new meaning in Miami Wednesday morning when a Shell gas station gave away free gas to hundreds of drivers.

"I think it's great," said one happy customer. "It's good, thank you so much," exclaimed another.

The gas was being pumped out for free from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. at the Shell station located on SW 8th Street and 106th Avenue.

Drivers who got in line in time received up to 15 gallons of regular-grade Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasoline.

The location of the free gas giveaway wasn't revealed until an hour before the promotion started. In a flash, a line of cars appeared to take part in the fuel free-for-all.

"I told my teenage daughter, we've got to go get gas," laughed Lilly Rodriguez.

The wait was between 15 and 45 minutes. Drivers said it was more than worth it.

"It's going to take me to work for the whole week," said Alan Padina.

"I only waited about 15 minutes, not bad at all. I'm going home to get another car, said a very happy Gary Webb who did return with a second car.

The so-called "Protect and Save" gasoline giveaway is part of a national initiative in which Shell is promoting its gas as a way to protect your engine while saving money.
