Key Largo Guitar Attack Sends Man To Jail

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami) - It had all the makings of a good country song; a guitar, a woman, and a fight. But instead of sweet music, this story ended on a sour note, with the guitar used to attack someone and the man accused of using it as a weapon under arrest.

The tale played out in Key Largo's Tradewind Plaza, near the ice cream store.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department said 42-year-old Eric Tappert and 23-year-old Michael Gray had argued over Tappert's girlfriend. Gray told investigators that he was walking on Sampson Road in Key Largo when Tappert came up behind him, and hit him in the head with his guitar.

Tappert took off, Gray said,  leaving Gray injured and bleeding from a head wound.

Deputy Dave Campbell went looking for the guitar-packing attacker, and found Tappert in the nearby shopping center, still holding a damaged guitar.

The Sheriff's Department said Tappert admitted whacking Gray with his instrument, so he was booked into jail on a charge of aggravated assault.
