S. Fla. Companies Seek Employees At UM Job Fair

CORAL GABLES (CBS4) -- Are you looking for a job? There are more than a dozen companies participating in a job fair in Coral Gables Thursday.

Participating companies include Winn Dixie, American Express, Sun Life Stadium, ALDI, Miami Logistics, Pollo Tropical, The Check Cashing Store, Miami Dolphins, Verizon, New York Life, US Gas & Electric, and others.

The Job Fair, sponsored by JobNewsMiami.com, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the BankUnited Center Field House at the University of Miami in Coral Gables. The BankUnited Center Field House is located at 1245 Dauer Drive.

Companies are hiring for a variety of positions including management, sales, customer service, hospitality, financial services and retail.

Sandra Remilien is one of the many jobseekers who came to the fair desperately looking for a job.

"My ideal career is a magazine job," Remilien said.

Remilien is certainly a qualified candidate with a bachelor's degree from the University of Miami and master's degree from Columbia University.

"Today I hope to get a full time job with benefits so I can start saving money to move out of my parents' house," she said.

Remilion is part of a group dubbed "the recession's lost generation," that's young adults struggling to find work and living at home with mom and dad.

"It's very hard, very hard," she said.

New Census data released Thursday shows how a recession that ended during mid-2009 highlights missed opportunities and dim prospects for a generation of twenty and thirty-something year olds.

James Nolan with JobNews Miami said the jobs market is slowly turning around.

"These folks are hiring now," Nolan said.

Seventeen companies, from Winnie Dixie to American Express Travel, are all hiring, with some positions paying more than $20 an hour.

Daniel Abraira was laid off from his corporate job in June. He said if he can't find of job Thursday he'll have to rent his home and move across county to live with family.

"It's a whole new era in America and I'm one of the people that's going to have to face the reality that the American dream is exactly that… it's a dream," he said.

Job seekers are encouraged to dress professionally, bring copies of your resume, stop at each booth and always remember to smile.
