Wrong Way Driver Plows Into Bus Stop, Kills Man

DORAL (CBS4) – A woman driving in the wrong direction killed a man Tuesday night after she crashed into a bus bench in front of the Miami International Mall in Doral.

Michelle Soto, 42, was behind the wheel of a silver Ford Mustang traveling south in the northbound lanes of 107th Avenue when she careened into the bus stop and slammed into 67-year old Giraldo Lopez who was sitting on the bench, according to Miami-Dade police.

"We are looking into the fact that she could be impaired, we don't know yet," said Miami-Dade police spokesman Roy Rutland, "And of course we are trying to determine if speed was a factor. That bus bench is actually bolted into the concrete, it is bolted next to the other bench that's here. So speed could be factor."

Lopez was pronounced dead on the scene. His wife, who was sitting next to him on the bench, was able to move out of the way of the oncoming car and escaped injury.

Family members are grieving.

"He never did anything," cried his son Frank Lopez. "All he ever did was care and give."

Police have not made any arrests.
