Teen Arrested In Shooting Near Miami Gardens' School

MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) – Three teens are recovering after they were shot Wednesday afternoon near Miami Carol City Senior High in Miami Gardens.

A fourth teen, the one accused of pulling the trigger, was identified as Tyrae Shahid Lane. Lane, 17, remains behind bars, but appeared in Miami-Dade Juvenile court Thursday.

He was ordered held for 21 days while prosecutors weigh whether to up the charges against him to attempted murder.

The shooting happened around 2:40 p.m., blocks away from the school in the area of 32nd Avenue and 183rd Street.

Miami Gardens police said officers in the area heard the shots and rushed to the scene. After reviewing security video from a gas station they found a firearm and took the suspected teen shooter into custody. During questioning he reportedly confessed.

During his court appearance, Judge Abby Cynamon told Lane's mother it's quite likely the case won't remain in the juvenile system.

"The state is letting us know now that they are contemplating filing charges in the adult court," Cynamon said.

The boy's mother, Tamika Nelson, was apologetic as she spoke to CBS4's Gary Nelson after the hearing.

"I just want to apologize to the families of the kids, and I hope they're feeling better," Nelson said.

The mother said her son has never been in serious trouble before.

"Kids, they hang around the wrong crowd," she said. "I know this is not my son. He never did anything like this before. I'm very surprised. I didn't raise him like this."

The potentially deadly situation took place in an area where dozens of students walk home from school.

"I just heard gun shots," said student Kira Payne.

A lot of students said they heard the gunfire and witnesses said the sound of that gunfire caused panic.

"It was scary. I was like, oh my gosh, who was getting killed and shot you know," said Payne.

Christian Valdes, who was working in a barber shop, said he heard four shots.

"Half of them threw themselves down to the floor while the shots were being fired and the other half started running back to the school," said Valdes.

At the school Thursday morning, it appeared to be a typical day but many parents and students said they are worried and concerned.

"You take your kids to school and drop them off and you hope that they come home safe," said parent Lloyd Shakes. "Ya don't want to have to worry about them."

Another parent told CBS4's Kara Kostanich he's also troubled about the shooting.

"Kids trying to go to school to get an education and you got these thugs running around here with guns, ya know, it's just rough," said James Wimes.

Police said the injured teens, two of which attend Miami Carol City High, were innocent bystanders. Two of the shooting victims have already been released from the hospital.

The three injured teens ages ranged from 14 through 19.

Some students said this type of violence is common at Carol City Senior High.

"I guess I'm used to it, so I'm not afraid," said student Timothy Mims.

Although Miami Gardens police say this type of shooting is relatively uncommon, they do add they get a high number of calls about fights on campus.

It's unclear at this time whether or not the shooter is a student at the school.
