Man Shot While Police Serve Eviction Notice In Critical Condition

PEMBROKE PINES (CBS4) –A Pembroke Pines man who was shot by police after allegedly setting the house on fire and putting up a fight is in critical condition, hospital officials said.

According to BSO spokesman Jim Leljedal, deputies were serving an eviction notice Friday just after 11 a.m. to Allen Gauntlett at 738 SW 107th Avenue, in the Hampton Isle community in Pembroke Pines, when things somehow got out of control.

Neighbor Manuel Reyes, who said he saw the incident unfold, said his neighbor fall to the ground after the confrontation with police. Reyes told CBS4's Joan Murray that he saw the man threatening police.

"Yes, pushing them," he said. "The man was later shot twice in the back and three times on the ground."

Pembroke Pines police said they were called to the scene by the deputies for help. During the apparent altercation, a fire was started inside the home and Gauntlett was shot.

"An altercation occurred," John Gazzano with Pembroke Pines Police said. "Shots were fired."

Gauntlett has a long history of problems paying his property assessments, Murray reported.

The unit was sold in February, but Gauntlett refused to leave.

When BSO showed up he tried to set his home on fire before rushing outside.

"Most of the time people are upset but this is not a reasonable thing," Leljedal said.

Firefighters were also called to the scene and the fire was brought under control.

Gauntlett was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital where as of Saturday morning was in critical condition.

No firefighters or police officers were injured.
