Fire Hydrant Stops Fire Dept. Vehicle Theft In Florida Keys

KEY WEST (CBS4)—A man is facing grand theft auto charges after authorities said he stole a fire department vehicle in the Florida Keys before crashing into a fire hydrant.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said a 26-year-old West Palm Beach man stole a vehicle from the county's fire rescue department early Monday.

Deputies said the man ran into a fire hydrant about 5 miles from the Big Coppitt Key firehouse. The crash disabled the vehicle.

The sheriff's office said the man told deputies he had borrowed the vehicle, but he could not provide the name of the person who loaned it to him. He has been charged with grand theft auto.
