BSO: Teen Made Up Story About Attempted Rape

DANIA BEACH (CBS4)—A 13-year old girl who told police she barely escaped a sexual predator as she walked in Dania Beach last week said she made the whole thing up for attention.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives say the girl fessed up to the lie when they met with her to review details of the case.

The teen had told deputies that on the night of June 14th, she walked to a convenience store on the 3400 block of Griffin Road to buy candy around 10 p.m.

She said as she was walking home through an open field, a man snuck up from behind and pulled her towards a tree while trying to remove her pants.

The girl told deputies she kicked the suspect and was able to escape without harm. She said she told her parents as soon as she got home and they reported the attack to the BSO.

The teen faced multiple charges including filing a false police report, but authorities have decided not to pursue those charges.

BSO investigators say the girl is facing personal hardship and emotional problems that would not be remedied in jail.
