Sports Agenda For Wednesday (6/22/11)

Thought of the Day: "He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it," Martin Luther King, Jr.

Big Story:
The Marlins took to the field again last night and los…wait, what? The Marlins won?
Oh no! The rumors of the apocalypse are true!!!!!
All kidding aside, it was good to see the Marlins get off the schnide last night; plus, North Carolina is in it up to their eyeballs, and the NFL continues to slowly move towards a CBA.
Let's hit this like a Javier Vazquez fastball, because let's face it, everyone else is hitting them!

Marlins: (vs. L.A. Angels, 7:10 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
Okay, let's get this out of the way first. It was one win after 11 losses in a row, just one win is all.
That said, it was impressive to see Vazquez end his winless streak and the Marlins winless streak at Sun Life last night.
Jack McKeon reinserted Hanley Ramirez into the lineup after he was called out by Logan Morrison for not being dedicated to the team and the game.
Good for Morrison to be the only player on the team with the, marbles, to say it.
It was a relative offensive explosion for the Fish who scored 5 runs on 12 hits.
Perhaps most impressive was that Ramirez seemed to play with his head on straight. He was 2-4 and scored twice. He advanced the runners at the cleanup spot, which is always good.
But the MVP of this team is Gaby Sanchez. He's hitting .304 for the season and cranked his 13th home run of the year last night. He's playing at an All-Star level, but we'll see if he can get into this year's All-Star game.
Mike Stanton returned to the lineup as well and showed no ill effects from his recent eye infection. The slugger went 3-4 with 2 RBI's.
But most notable was the Marlins finally looked like they were having fun.
The Marlins had been in a bad way due to poor management and the inmates running the asylum.
Now, there's a cagey old veteran at the top who scared his subordinates at first to get them to understand it's his way or the highway. But that veteran has a proven track record of success and isn't just the flavor of the month brought in because he could smooch the right backside.
Of course given the fact that it's the Marlins, if they start winning, expect owner Jeffrey Loria to break up the team asap. Because in Loria's world, having a bad baseball team is a fact of life and it almost seems like something he strives for each year.

College Football:
The University of North Carolina was hit in the face with its Notice of Allegation from the NCAA Tuesday night and let's just put it this way, UNC may be ready to get the SMU treatment.
They were hit with charges that included: academic fraud, extra benefits, a coach working for an agent, lying to the NCAA, receiving impermissible benefits, unethical conduct, failure by the institution to monitor social media, and other charges.
In other words, through the conduct of the program, it became as corrupt as SMU when it received the death penalty.
Ouch.
The strangest aspect was the missing lack of institutional control.
Really?
They're hit with the kitchen sink of allegations and there was no charge of lack of institutional control.
What does a school have to do to get hit with that…kill a player?
Still, I think if any school is going to have the hammer dropped on them it's going to be Carolina. USC's punishment will be a cake-walk compared to what happens at UNC.
In other words, UM is going to have a free victory to schedule for the next several years when they play the Tar Heels.
Way to go UM!!!
And…UNC takes over the top spot for most corrupt school in the conference.
Atta boy Butch!!!

Pro Football:
So the owners held their meetings Tuesday and details began to leak out about a possible new CBA.
Depending on which entity you trust, a deal is either close or still a long ways off.
I'm going to say based on my reading of the tea leaves that a deal can get done by the end of June and will probably be announced over the 4th of July weekend.
After that, get ready cause it's going to be the wild west when it comes to free agency.
Won't it be great to finally enjoy talkin' some football!!!!!!!
