MIRAMAR (CBS4) – Starting this fall passengers on Spirit Airlines will have to pay an additional five dollars if they pick their boarding pass up from the ticket agent at the gate.

The Miramar based carrier, which is the only U.S. airline to charge for carry-on luggage, said the new boarding pass fee will go into effect on November 1st. Passengers can avoid the fee by printing the boarding pass at home, or by using a check-in kiosk at the airport. However, in June 2012 there will be a new fee of one dollar for passengers who print out their boarding passes at the kiosks.

In addition to the new boarding pass fees, Spirit also announced that was it’s lowering fares by $5 each way.

This article is a bit misleading since the part about the airfare decrease was mentioned as more of a side note – Oh, by the way….

The fact is, they are reducing their fares by $5. So, if you print your boarding pass at home, you’ve saved $5! If you have an agent print your pass, you will be charged back the $5 that was discounted, bringing your fare back to it’s original price. Nobody is paying anything MORE than the original fare due to this change.
