Coral Springs Red Light Cameras Go "Live"

CORAL SPRINGS (CBS4) - Red light cameras at two busy Coral Springs intersections are now 'live'.

The cameras, on Riverside Drive at University Drive and Sample Road, will snap two pictures and record a short video of vehicles that pass the stop line after the light turns red. A police officer will then examine the images and decide whether or not a violation has occurred.

The city is giving drivers a 30 grace period and those caught on camera will be given notices instead of an actual fine. After that, drivers caught on camera will receive a $158 fine. Those who receive fines will have 30 days to pay it or challenge it in court. If not paid within 30 days, it is then considered a standard traffic infraction and the fine is beefed up to $263.

The city plans to install seven more cameras by the end of the year.
