Miami Sizzles Under Record Heat

MIAMI (CBS4) - If you thought it was really, really hot outside on Tuesday you were right.

In fact, Miami set a new record. Temperatures at Miami International Airport reached 97 degrees which broke the old record of 96 degrees set back in 1998.

Wednesday could also be one for the record books.

After getting off to a smoky start thanks to westerly winds pushing smoke from new brush fires burning Collier County over Miami-Dade and Broward, temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-90s by the afternoon.

The CBS4 Storm Team is forecasting a high of 95 degrees in Miami; the old record is
94 degrees set back in 2010. The forecast for Ft.Lauderdale is 94 degrees, just shy of the old record of 96 degrees set back in 1998. However, when you factor in the humidity, it will feel like the triple-digits.

In addition to the heat, we are in for another round of rain this afternoon into the evening hours.

CBS4 meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez said scattered storms will develop due to the westerly winds, the heating of the day and the sea breeze pushing in later on. Some storms may be strong and lead to heavy downpours, gusty winds, lightning and small hail. Thursday the summery pattern continues with highs in the 90s and afternoon storms. Later this week the winds shift out of the east and temperatures will drop down a few degrees with more of an easterly breeze, some showers possible this weekend.
