Fla. Universities Eyeing 7 Percent Tuition Increase

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) -- Trustees at six of Florida's 11 state universities have unanimously agreed to raise tuition by 7 percent.

That's on top of an 8 percent increase ordered by the Legislature for the next academic year.

Trustees at the other five schools also are scheduled to vote on 7 percent increases during the next week.

The requests then will go to the Board of Governors for final action when it meets June 23 in Tampa.

Last year, the board approved identical proposals for all 11 universities. That raised their tuition rates by 15 percent -- the legal limit.

A State University System analysis shows the additional 7 percent approved last year saved or created 947 jobs for faculty members and advisors.

It also saved or added 4,318 course sections.
