Gift Giving Guide To Father's Day

MIAMI (CBS4) -  Father's Day is just around the corner, millions of Americans are opening up their wallets to buy something special for dear old dad.

And we're spending more and more each year. In 2011, the average person will spend 94 dollars on gifts, giving retailers a boost of $9.8 billion.

"Given that spring is typically a slowdown in retail sales," said Retail Analyst Joe Feldman. "Mother's Day and Father's Day are big drivers of sales and you definitely see a spike around those major holidays."

What should the country's 67 million fathers expect to receive this year?

40 percent of Americans will be taking dad for dinner or brunch, and 65 percent will keep the greeting card business alive.

The other two major winners include the retail and electronic sectors, each of which rakes in over a billion dollars. Now that's a lot of ties and gadgets.

If your budget is tight, you may also want to consider giving the gift of time.

Your father will appreciate a day off while someone else mows the lawn, walks the dog, or washes the car.
