Police: Rider Swung Belt At Bus Driver, Failed To Pay Fare

MIAMI - (CBS4) -For failing to pay a $2 bus fare and allegedly swinging his belt at a bus driver, an 18-year-old now faces a $5,000 bond and a battery charge.

Tyrone Hubbert boarded a bus Monday night at Northeast Sixth Avenue and 127th Street and found himself in a jam when his bus card failed to go through as he attempted to swipe it through the bus fare reader.

When the bus driver Dennis Day asked him to leave if he couldn't pay the fare, police say, Hubbert became enraged.

Hubbert stayed on the bus as the driver took off. Then, Hubbert allegedly swung his belt at the bus driver's partition numerous times. He struck the bus driver who then stopped the bus and subdued Hubbert, according to the police report.

Police arrived and arrested Hubbert. He was held at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ward D where injured prisoners are treated.

Hubbert was charged with one count of battery on a public transit employee.
