Broward Delays Naming Interim Superintendent

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami.com) – The Broward School Board delayed a decision to name an interim superintendent to replace outgoing superintendent Jim Notter when he leaves the job on June 30.

The board did agree to the withdrawal of the only interim candidate, Broward County Schools Chief Operating Officer Donnie Carter. The COO didn't have the requisite Master's Degree which is required for the permanent Superintendent position.

Carter could still get the job, but only if the board amends the job requirement for an interim superintendent.

Notter is leaving the position just months after a scathing grand jury report was released that called the school district corrupt and inept. But, Notter said the report had nothing to do with his leaving.

Whoever takes over in the interim will be stepping into a firestorm over potential teacher layoffs. Broward County plans to layoff upwards of 1,400 teachers due to reductions in funding set forth by the GOP-lead Florida legislature.

The interim superintendent will also face tough questions on why Broward County is laying teachers off while Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties, facing the same budget woes, are not laying off any teachers.

The Broward School Board hired a search firm, Ray & Associates, to handle the search for a permanent superintendent. The search will cost the county approximately $60,000.
