Incentive Offered For Early Completion Of FLL Runway Upgrade

DANIA BEACH (CBS4) - Homeowners annoyed by the noise of jets using an alternate runway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will get a reprieve sooner than expected.

A construction plan that will provide a $300,000 incentive for early completion of improvements to runway 9L/27R was approved by Broward County Commissioners Tuesday.

Construction on the runway began on May 3rd, forcing planes to land on an alternate runway, creating a flight pattern over residential areas that normally do not experience aircraft noise.

The improvements would have to be completed before June 24th, thirteen days earlier than the target completion date.

The accelerated plan also has a benefit for airlines. It would minimize delays currently experienced by flights having to use the alternate runway.

"It's been an extended period of time now and there is a lot of noise being generated.  I've asked staff to see what can be done to mitigate that noise.  My constituents are really suffering," said Vice-Mayor John Rodstrom, who initiated the discussion.
During the meeting, commissioners also passed a resolution asking airlines to have their pilots use specific flight "profiles" designed to mitigate noise emitted from planes no matter that runway is used for takeoffs and landings.

The resolution will be sent to all airlines operating out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the Federal Aviation Administration. Ultimately, procedures will be decided by pilots to determine the safest operation of the aircraft.
