Good 4 You: Teen Tie-Dyes For A Cause

COCONUT CREEK (CBS4) - A South Florida teenager is making dreams come true with her brand new clothing line.

Samantha Kerker, 16, spent her savings to start a business and instead of using the money to buy herself a car, she donated to children have way around the world.

Kerker started the clothing line which started off as a school project.

She used the money she saved for her car to buy almost 500 pieces of clothing and invest in her new company.

"Originally it was 20 t-shirts. I would tie dye them and sell them on the streets and get a hundred dollars and then donate it," said Kerker.

The project grew and became Samantha's charity Tie Dye Unique which took over Samantha's life.

"We did sweatshirts, sweatpants, t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirts, socks and camisoles," said Kerker.

The sale raised $7,000, and under the guidance of Food for the Poor, Kerker donated the money to a village in Nicaragua where they gave her a warm welcome.

She went to work and with Food for the Poor volunteers, putting the finishing touches on a home her money built.

"She is a young lady who very early in life had the maturity to understand that we are a land of plenty here. There are some who are suffering there with almost nothing at all," said Angel Aloma, Executive Director for Food for the Poor.

During Samantha's visit to Nicaragua, her mission became even clearer.

"There are these kids without clothes, without shoes, without food, just running around in the streets," said Kerker who will continue to sell her tie dye creations and raise more than just money, but also awareness.

Kerker has already raised another $3,000 and wants to make it to $10,000 in order to make a second donation.

"We are building a home for someone. We are changing someone's life," said Kerker.
