Derby, Time With Mom Dominate Weekend Plans

MIAMI (CBS4)- It's a busy weekend in South Florida. From horses and hats to showing mom some love, there's plenty to get ready for this weekend.

The 137th annual Kentucky Derby is this Saturday and South Floridians can enjoy the southern tradition here at home without having to go visit Kentucky.

The Cinema Paradiso at 503 SE 6th Street in Fort Lauderdale is holding a huge party during the Derby, starting at 4 p.m.

For $25, participants get one mint julep, Kentucky style buffet and decadent desserts. Then at race time, head inside the theater to see Churchhill downs bigger than life.

Ladies, don't forget to wear your race day hats.

Attention Kylie Minogue fans. The singer and her Aphrodite Live tour is coming to Sunrise.

If you need a dance break from a week of work head to the Bank Atlantic Center Saturday night. Tickets are still available and range from $66 to $138. Kylie hits the stage at 9 p.m.

The big day this weekend is Mother's Day, which is on Sunday.

Various events across South Florida are planned for mom's special day.  The Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Coral Gables will be serving brunch, followed by a Mother's Day tea party.

Jungle Island is also holding a similar brunch in celebration of the women in your life, and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood is having specials at many of its restaurants.

If mom is a sports fanatic, a trip to the ball park will make her happy. The Florida Marlins go up against the Washington Nationals at Sun Life Stadium Sunday afternoon, and of course don't forget the peanuts and cracker jacks purchase.

You may have heard a rumble in movie theatres Friday. "Thor" the God of thunder is out at the box office.

The powerful, but arrogant, warrior God is cast out and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he becomes one of their finest defenders. Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman star in the PG-13 epic action movie.

There are additional events across South Florida. Visit CBS4's local events section for the complete list of happenings around town.
