Fla. School Nutrition Bill Heads To Governor

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) -- The Florida House has voted to move oversight of school nutrition programs from the Department of Education to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The vote was 115-1.

This bill (SB 1312) has been a pet project of Adam Putnam, the agriculture commissioner, who said it will help create efficiencies between Florida farmers and school meals and bring more fresh and wholesome foods to Florida's school cafeterias.

Many Democrats spoke in support of the measure, saying it will help lessen obesity problems in the state.

"Florida's children deserve every opportunity to have a well-balanced and nutritious meal, and Florida agriculture stands ready to partner with local school districts to ensure this is not only a possibility, but also a top priority," Putnam said in a statement.
