Voters To Elect Mayor, Council Members In Two Cities

MIAMI - (CBS4) - Voters in Miami Shores and Coral Gables will be heading to the polls Tuesday to elect a mayor and fill several council seats.

In Coral Gables, 11 candidates are vying for three commission seats and two challengers have emerged in an attempt to unseat the sitting mayor Don Slesnick.

The two men hoping to unseat Slesnick are Tom Korge and Jim Cason.

Some residents say the races have brought out the worst in candidates. Some mailers called one candidate a "deadbeat." Another calls a candidate "bad news."

Bill Silver, a resident of Coral Gables for the past 49 years, said he's not impressed.

"The Coral Gables elections have stooped to a new low. It is a race to the bottom for those candidates who choose to trash the others instead of presenting their own qualifications,'' Silver told CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

Father north in Miami Shores, seven candidates are vying for four at-large seats with the top vote-getter being named mayor.

Already bad news has marked the election with one openly gay candidate reporting to police that some of his signs had been defaced with anti-gay expressions. Miami Shores police say Jesse Walters' signs were removed and collected as evidence in the hate crime.

Three of the seven candidates in Miami Shores are political novices and they are Angela Alvero, 45; Robert Swan, 60; and 55-year-old Walters.

They are challenging the four incumbents who are Hunt Davis, Prospero Herrera, Stephen Loffredo and Jim McCoy.
