Key's 7 Mile Bridge To Close For Annual Run
MARATHON (CBS4) - The Seven Mile Bridge, longest of 43 spans in the Florida Keys, will temporarily close to traffic this weekend for the annual 7-Mile Bridge Run.
Monroe County sheriff's officials will stop traffic on the bridge beginning at 6:45 a.m. Saturday and plan to reopen it at 9:00 a.m. In its 31st year, the race features 1,500 runners competing on a course over the convergence of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.
The event was first held in 1982 to commemorate the completion of the Florida Keys bridge rebuilding program. It has become so popular it sells out within days after registration forms are available.
The annual bridge run is held by the Marathon Runners Club as a benefit for youth activities in Marathon.
