SWAT Standoff Ends In Lauderhill

LAUDERHILL (CBS4) -- A Broward Sheriff's SWAT team was called out after a Lauderhill man fired several rounds from his third floor apartment landing and then barricaded himself inside the unit.

The scene unfolded Thursday morning at the Hawaiian Gardens Apartments in the 5000 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard. BSO spokesman Mike Jachles said the man has a history of mental illness.

In video from Chopper 4, sheriffs' deputies, along with SWAT team members suited up in bullet proof vests and other protective gear outside the apartment building. They've even unloaded what appears to be a type of battering ram. BSO has evacuated a few nearby apartments as a safety precaution. Jachles says nobody else is inside the apartment.

Just after 9 a.m., the team moved in and took the man into custody.
