Girl, 1, Hit By Father's Car Rushed To Hospital

MIAMI (CBS4) – A one-year -girl was rushed to the hospital Thursday morning after she was struck by a car driven by her own father.

According to Miami-Dade police, the girl was accidentally run over by her father's car at SW 214th Street and 212th Avenue. The girl was taken by air rescue helicopter to Miami Children's Hospital. Police say she was conscious and breathing when she was transported.

This type of accident happens more often than one might imagine. Wednesday, the Department of Transportation held hearings on this very safety issue which experts say leads to 50 children being hit by cars per week. It happens when people back up their cars into a child, often in the car owner's very own driveway.

The DOT is calling for a new law that would require back-up cameras be made standard equipment on all motor vehicles by 2014.

60- percent of back over cases involve a larger vehicle like a van, SUV or truck. Minivans reportedly have an average blind zone of up to 28 feet, SUVs 39 feet and for trucks, it can be a whopping 50 feet.

Back-up cameras are currently standard on 204 car models for 2011, but most of those are on high-end vehicles. After-market back-up cameras can be purchased for as little as $100.
