Prison Closures To Save Fla. Taxpayers $30M

TALLAHASEE - (CBS4) - Six of the state's prisons may close as early as this June, but their closure won't mean a get-out-of-jail free card for prisoners, officials said.

A Florida Department of Corrections representative made that announcement Tuesday and said that the move will save taxpayers at least $30 million this year.

The following prisons will be closing: Brevard Correctional Institution in Cocoa; Hendry Correctional Institution in Immokalee;  Hillsborough Correctional Institution in Riverview; Tallahassee Road Prison and the Lowell and Sumter boot camps.

Employees at these facilities will be offered jobs elsewhere and the shuttering of these prison facilities does not mean inmates will be released early, officials said.

That's because a surplus of beds will allow inmates to be transferred to other facilities.
