President Obama Makes One-Day Trip To Miami Friday

MIAMI - (CBS4) - President Barack Obama is expected to land in Miami Friday afternoon to headline a fundraiser for a key Democrat and talk to students at a Miami high school.

The fundraiser for Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson will be held at Miami Beach's posh Fontainebleau Hotel Friday evening. Obama is also expected to raise funds for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Their appearance together is expected to draw protestors from Holocaust survivors who are asking for the right to sue in United States courts the European insurance companies who hold pre-World War II policies on Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

As members of the Holocaust Survivors' Foundation USA they are asking both Obama and Sen. Bill Nelson to stand with them in their quest for their rightful slice of the $20 billion that has never been paid to Jewish policy holders.

Only about 3 percent of the policies have ever been paid, according to the group's attorney Sam Dubbin.

The President lands at Miami International Airport Friday afternoon. His first stop will be Miami Central Senior High at 1781 NW 95th St. where he is expected to meet with students and teachers.

Obama is expected to team up with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to talk about "how winning the future in education" is a shared responsibility at all levels of government.

Miami Central Senior High School was selected because it receives a federal grant that supports persistently low-achieving schools.

The school recently replaced its principal and half of its staff to execute a plan that calls for a more rigorous lesson plan. It appears to be working since the students' scores have improved since the program was put in place in 2005-2006 school year.

Obama is expected to return to Washington, D.C. Friday evening.
