S. Fla. Man Gets 15 Days In Jail, Probation For Horse Abuse

MIAMI (CBS4) -A South Florida man will serve his 15 days jail sentence for starving seven horses that were discovered in 2009 stuck in the mud.

Lewis Chisholm was convicted Friday of misdemeanor animal abuse charges. He also was sentenced to a year of probation.

Miami-Dade County Judge Andrew Hague also ordered Chisholm to give the horses to the South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

During Chisholm's trial, prosecutors said the horses' ribs were visible, their legs were swollen and their hooves were untreated. Veterinarians testified that the horses were left unfed and exposed to the rain, sun and mud for weeks.

On the stand, Chisholm said he took care of the horses. He rejected a deal to settle the case through a pretrial diversion program if he gave up the animals.
