Miami-Dade Metro Transit Commuters To Get Free Wi-Fi

MIAMI (CBS4)- Miami-Dade transit commuters will be able to surf the Internet for free compliments of the Miami-Dade Transit and Enterprise Technology Services.

The free wireless service on all Metrorail and Metromover cars, and select Metrobus routes is an expansion of the Wireless Miami-Dade County Initiative, which brought free wireless service to Goulds, Tamiami and Tropical parks.

In 2008, four of Miami-Dade County's largest public parks began providing free wireless service to residents and visitors as part of a pilot program. Since then, over 100,000 users have logged on.  Due to the success of this pilot program, the county decided to extend the program to Metrorail and Metrobus.

Wireless routers have been installed on four coaches serving a total of 20 trains throughout the entire rail network and in two 95 Express Buses.

Taxpayer funds are not used for Wireless Miami-Dade County, according to the county. Instead funds came from the private sector for network infrastructure, as well as the ongoing operation and maintenance of the infrastructure.

Residents and visitors who use Miami-Dade Transit will be able to access the Internet through their laptops or other mobile devices.

Mayor Alvarez said that not only are they improving commute time and accessibility to venues throughout the community, but they are enhancing the transit experience.

Alvarez announced the launch of the Wi-Fi service Wednesday morning at the Palmetto Metrorail Station.
