ACC Releases 2011 Football Schedule

MIAMI (CBS4) - The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 2011 football schedule for its member teams and for the first time since 1991, Florida State and Miami will not play their game until November.

The Florida State versus University of Miami rivalry game is set for November 12 in Tallahassee. For Florida State fans, they better hope that history doesn't repeat itself as the 1991 version is best known for its ending when FSU kicker Gerry Thomas missed a game-winning field goal in the final seconds. It has become known as "Wide Right I."

Florida State opens the season with three straight home games. FSU starts the season versus the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks and then will welcome in the Buccaneers from Charleston Southern University.

But those games will only be scrimmages before FSU's biggest game of the season against the Oklahoma Sooners on September 17. Oklahoma is likely to come in with a top 10 ranking and FSU will use the game as a measuring stick to see exactly how good the team can be in 2011.

For the FSU game, Oklahoma will either be coming off a game against Missouri, or facing Missouri the next week, unless the schedule for the Sooners changes. That would put OU either already in league play or preparing for league play when they play FSU.

After the Oklahoma game, FSU heads on the road for their next three games. On September 24, FSU plays Clemson followed by an off week. The Seminoles then play at Wake Forest and at Duke starting October 8.

The Noles then return home for a pair of games against the Maryland Terrapins and North Carolina State Wolfpack on October 22 and 29. FSU then squeezes a Thursday night ESPN game in against Boston College before preparing for the early November showdown against the Canes.

The Noles close out the schedule after the FSU game with another home game against Virginia and then on November 26, the Noles battle the Florida Gators for state supremacy.

The U's road to an ACC Championship game berth begins on September 5 when the Canes visit the Maryland Terrapins for a Monday night ESPN game.

The Canes then take a week off and prepare for their biggest test of the season outside of Florida State when Miami welcomes in the Ohio State Buckeyes into Sun Life Stadium on September 17.

The Buckeyes will be without five of their best players including star quarterback Terrelle Pryor. All will be serving suspensions for their activities last year when they sold memorabilia or received free tattoos.

After the Ohio State game, the Canes must get ready again for a battle against the Big XII's Kansas State Wildcats. While not the team they were in the 1990's, the Wildcats will still be a tough, but winnable game for the Canes.

Miami then plays Bethune-Cookman on October 1 before heading on the road to play at Virginia Tech and at North Carolina starting October 8. UM then comes home for three straight against Georgia Tech, Virginia (on a Thursday night) and the Duke Blue Devils.

Following the Duke game UM turns their attention to the battle in Tallahassee against the Noles; and then travels across the state to play the South Florida Bulls on November 19. The Canes will finish their season in the friendly confines of Sun Life Stadium on November 26 with a tough game against the Boston College Eagles.
