Is Miami Beach Home To One Of The Nation's Dirtiest Hotels?

MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) - This week, the world's largest travel website, TripAdvisor.com, announced the ten dirtiest hotels in America and one South Florida hotel made TripAdvisor's list.

At first glance, Atlantic Beach Hotel on 34th and Collins is just another vintage Miami Beach building. But TripAdvisor.com says it's simply "dirty."

The website listed Atlantic Beach as one of the top ten dirtiest hotels in America. It's number 6 on the list.

One guest did not want to be identified for this story, but said the photos he saw on the hotel's website were promising.

"I thought it was [pretty good]. Looks are deceiving. Could've sworn it was something from Scarface," he said.

Another guest sent CBS4 News some photos apparently showing exposed dry wall, broken glass windows, ceiling problems, and a dirty mattress.

Online, a previous guest writes that it's an "unsafe and terrible place." Another calls it a "hot mess." And another guest says you're "better off sleeping on the beach."

Rooms start at $49 per night.

"It's not a 3-star hotel, 4-star hotel, 5-star hotel. Don't expect much in the hotel," said Eduardo Almeida, the regional sales manager for the hotel.

Almeida doesn't consider this one of the dirtiest hotels in America.

"Not at all. Not at all. Even the finest hotel in the world, if you're coming and you want to make a bad comment, you're going to find something," said Almeida.

But the city of Miami Beach did find past violations, including bed bugs and holes in the ceiling. Both problems were fixed. The Miami-Dade Health Department had no complaints about this hotel.

The only open violation is an expired business license and unpaid resort taxes. Management has until April 21st to get that taken care of with the City.
