Deputies Rescue Elderly Man From Oakland Park House Fire

OAKLAND PARK (CBS4)- An unconscious 80-year-old man was rescued after a fire broke out in his home in Oakland Park Saturday morning.

Oakland Park Fire Rescue said the man was found unresponsive in the master bedroom by two Broward Sheriff's Office deputies when they arrived just after 7 a.m. at the 4300 block of NE 17th Avenue.

Oakland Park Fire Rescue Chief Donald P. Widing praised the deputies and fire fighters for their life-saving efforts.

"The quick actions by BSO deputies entering a highly smoke-charged structure, retrieving the victim, and effective administration provided by Oakland Park paramedics reflects favorably on the cooperative actions of the public safety professionals that serve our community," he said.

The man, who was treated on the scene and regained consciousness, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital. He was treated for smoke inhalation and is expected to recover.

There was extensive smoke and fire damage. Electrical wiring in the attic is thought to be the cause of the fire, officials said.
