'Fins Hire Daboll To Run Offense

MIAMI (CBS4) -- The Miami Dolphins have officially named Brian Daboll as their new offensive coordinator.

Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano made the announcement at a Wednesday news conference.

"I want to thank Tony and [general manager] Jeff [Ireland] for the opportunity," said Daboll on Wednesday. "I'm excited to get going here, get to know these players. There's going to be a variety of things we're going to try to accomplish with this offense. We're going to do our due diligence to get this offense going."

Daboll was the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator the past two seasons.

Daboll wasn't expected to be retained by the Browns after they fired head coach Eric Mangini following a second successive 5-11 season. Dan Henning left the Dolphins after three seasons as their coordinator.

Daboll takes over an offense that ranked 21st in the NFL in yardage this season. The Dolphins were next to last in the AFC in points -- behind only the Browns.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has pledged the offense will be more aggressive, creative and exciting in 2011. That promise came as Ross gave head coach Tony Sparano a two-year contract extension following a disappointing 7-9 season.

Ross courted Stanford coach and offensive whiz Jim Harbaugh as a replacement for Sparano. Harbaugh instead was hired by the San Francisco 49ers.

Daboll was the New York Jets' quarterbacks coach in 2007-08. He spent seven seasons with the New England Patriots as a defensive coaching assistant (2000-01) and wide receivers coach (2002-06).
