State Cancels Online Driver's Permit Testing

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) - Those long lines at your local Department of Motor Vehicles office are about to get even longer.

Beginning this year, the DMV will no longer allow teens to take their learner permit tests online. Those wishing to get a permit, which is needed before getting a driver's license, will now have to go to a county tax collector or DMV office and take the test in person.

State officials say the online test, which was instituted in 2004, has been discontinued because it was unreliable. In 2009, the DMV retested about 600 people who passed the test online. Only 41 percent of those people passed the test in person.

In addition to creating longer lines, the cancellation of the online test will also cost the state. Last year the test, which cost $20 to $30 to take online, generated between two to three million dollars in revenue. There's no charge to take the test in person.
