MIAMI (CBS4) – MIAMI (CBS4) – Gerardo “Gerry” Herrera was on his motorcycle Friday night making what was likely one of his last trips of the year.

A van driver guaranteed that when he apparently cut Herrera off, causing the 23-year-old to crash.

The unknown driver then pulled over and stared at the dying Herrera before driving off.

“He was a really good person. He tried really hard,” said Guedy Lara, Herrera’s wife.

The accident happened late Friday at US 1 and 336th Street in South Miami-Dade, according to Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

Det. Zabaleta said a white Chevy or Ford van was northbound and made a left turn in front of Herrera. That sent Herrera to the pavement, badly injured.

Witnesses called for help, but Herrera later died of his injuries.

“He (the driver) never exited his vehicle, never rendered aid, never called 911,” said Det. George Wilhelm of the Miami-Dade Police Traffic Homicide Unit.

Herrera leaves behind a wife and a 4-year-old son.

His wife, Lara, has a message for the driver who didn’t stop to help her husband.

“You know what, I’m not even angry, please just do the right thing. He had a family, he had a four year old son, who now doesn’t have a father,” she said.
