Warehouse Fire Sparked By Power Cord Overload

POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) - Pompano Beach Fire Rescue officials determined that an early morning fire in a warehouse was not intentionally set.

Pompano Beach spokeswoman Sandra King said they received a 911 call just before 9 a.m. of smoke and flames coming from a warehouse unit in the 1600 block of SW 7th Avenue.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to the one unit which was packed with appliances, suitcases, comforters and other assorted items.

The owner of the unit said he was in it Tuesday morning and was using an extension cord to power a television and a lighting unit. He said when he left around 3 a.m. everything was fine.

City fire inspectors say the overloaded extension cord, which ran into a neighboring bay, appears to have sparked the fire. Two bays on either side of the one which caught fire were damaged by smoke.

No injuries were reported.
